buildingcommunityWORKSHOP (bcWORKSHOP), a Texas-based nonprofit community design center that seeks to improve the livability and viability of communities through thoughtful design and making, has developed a new program called RAPIDO. RAPIDO is a holistic approach that enables communities to more quickly recover from disasters—reducing response time and cost of recovery—by delivering higher quality housing to affected families. Utilizing a temp-to-perm strategy, RAPIDO provides immediate emergency housing while laying the groundwork for a permanent home.

By reviewing and re-designing the entire disaster recovery process with the people who are impacted the most, RAPIDO fosters resilience within communities and abates many social and economic impacts of disaster. RAPIDO evaluates every level of the housing recovery process, including community outreach, case management, housing design & construction, labor recruitment, and policy design.
