How can DIY design/build, tactical urbanism, and other radical approaches to youth engagement encourage play and a feeling of being welcome and sanctioned in public space? What can we learn from the youth perspective as we consider access to and activation of public space? Can the civic commons be a creative learning ecosystem?

Organizations who work with youth to offer engaging, meaningful, and equitable approaches to design education will share their philosophy and approach, and discuss the challenges and possibilities of their work. We will explore different models of design training and apprenticeship that respond to the changing needs of youth today in terms of technology, skills and workforce development. This conversation will go beyond what is on offer for youth and explore what is at stake for us—the public—when we truly hear and value youth participation in conversations about the evolution of our streets, neighborhoods, cities and regions.
